Firesteel No. 9 (French)

This hand-forged high carbon firesteel was inspired by a design found at an archeological dig in France. The people of this part of Western Europe were using the flint and steel method of fire making since at least the time of the struggles between the native Gauls and the invading Romans.

We at Flint and Steel are committed to providing a wide range of different firesteel for use in fire making. Whatever your personal preferences, we will always do our best to accommodate your needs.

This French steel striker differs from the firesteels of Northern Europe in that it is asymmetrical and has a longer striking edge. While its weight is slightly less well-balanced in your hands than that of more symmetrically designed strikers, it is easier to hold and use for people with larger fingers.

The increased surface area offered by the longer striking platform of this firesteel means that you'll have a greater chance of generating sparks upon striking the sharp edge of a piece of flint stone. All firesteels have their advantages over other fire making tools, and the properties of this French style firesteelr make it the best gift for any bushcraft or camping enthusiast.

All of our handmade traditional firesteels are shipped with a complimentary piece of high-grade flint stone so that you can strike sparks right out of the box. For the best results, we recommend that you use our equipment in conjunction with linen-based char cloth tinder and jute twine kindling.

If you have any questions before you buy firesteels from Flint and Steel, you'll be sure to find your answers in one of our demonstration videos.
