Flint and Steel Kit No. 4.1.1

Flint and Steel Kit No. 4.1.1 is a variation of Kit No. 4.1 in that it is supplied with an additional shoulder strap. This tan-colored genuine leather strap is attached to the bag's metal eyelets by two carbines for extra security when out in the woods.

This strap is adjustable in length, making it suitable for all purposes and all kinds of people. This traditional fire making kit is a perfect gift for both novice Boy Scouts going out their first camping trip and seasoned hunters heading off on their thousandth expedition.

At Flint and Steel, we pride ourselves in providing fire starter kits that contain everything you need to make a campfire quickly and effectively. Organization is key when undertaking important outdoor tasks like fire making, and as such, this leather bag includes internal compartments with individual spaces for each component of the kit.

These components include:

  • A hand-forged high carbon firesteel, 3” (75 mm) in length
  • A small tin container of linen-based char cloth tinder
  • Two pieces of high-grade dark gray flint
  • Two bundles of jute twine kindling
  • A color-illustrated, step-by-step instruction manual

As we hail from a family which has produced some of the finest European blacksmiths and leather craftsmen in an unbroken line lasting at least 200 years, we produce almost every single aspect of our kits ourselves by hand. The single exception is the small tin container for char cloth.

We consistently strive to maintain and preserve the traditional methods used by our ancestors to create our easy-to-use flint and steel fire making kits. This even goes as far as making sure that we use linen and not cotton when making our char cloth, as the introduction of cotton to Northern Europe did not occur until well after the Iron Age was under way.

We want to make fire making with a traditional firesteel as simple as possible, so we have produced a range of product demonstration videos for you to choose the right kit for you as an individual. You can also check out our instructional videos to help you make your first real primitive fire.
